Unraveling Emotions: A Journey through awareness and release

March 12, 20245 min read

Embrace the journey of unraveling emotions; for in releasing the past, we discover the freedom to live authentically, with an open heart and arms ready to embrace the beauty of each present moment.

Have you ever felt like you were carrying a heavy load?

Have you ever felt like you were carrying a heavy load, and you can’t quite put your finger on why things felt so heavy and muddy?  It’s quite possible that you are feeling the weight of old emotions, the things you didn’t know how to, or have the capacity to resolve in the moment so they just got stored away.

The dark side to this is that the feelings didn’t just go away, they got stored in the tissues of your body only to show up at a later date in some destructive way so that you finally have to pay attention to them.  Outbursts of anger, anxiety, unexplained body pain, sleeplessness, brain fog, etc.

Then there are also the ones that didn't even belong to you.  The emotions that you absorbed from other people, many times unknowingly.  People close to me knew that I was an emotional person and that I could easily start leaking tears, both good and sad, but the truth that I know now is that I was over capacitated by having taken on other peoples worries, hurts, anger and concerns without even knowing it.

I was like an overstuffed poopy diaper that when pushed in any direction would leak out crap.  When someone described this to me, as me, i had never felt so seen!  I love and feel and experience things deeply but what I hadn’t been taught to do was how to process all the emotion that my body was holding on to.  This is why I’m so passionate about  helping others out of this scenario! To you dear friend, find help and start processing all that you’ve been holding on to so you can experience life as your genuine self, not an amalgam of your old experiences, emotions and other people’s crap!!!  It’s unbelievably freeing!!

Emotions can linger with us.

Stored deep in our bodies, affecting our daily lives and overall well-being. For many, myself included, this realization can be both overwhelming and liberating. It was eight years ago when I began my own journey with processing stored trauma, seeking relief from the weight of negative emotions that seemed to shadow every aspect of my otherwise beautiful life.

At that time, I found myself burdened by emotions that weren't mine, carrying the weight of others' pain as if it were my own. It made me feel like the worst version of myself, suffocating under the weight of unresolved feelings. It was during this period that I sought out an energy healer who introduced me to the transformative power of somatic movement, energy work, taught me to make some noise, cry real tears and to feel the experience out to the end so there was nothing left but a space that could then heal over..

Tapping

Tapping, somatic movement and yoga are practices that engage both the body and mind in releasing stored emotions. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily focuses on verbal expression, these modalities delve into the physical sensations associated with emotions, allowing for a deeper understanding and release of pent-up feelings. I have loved my practice of and deep understanding of these tools.  I have facilitated tapping for 100s of clients over the years and am so excited to be adding in somatic movement and yoga to add to how I can help people searching for relief.

Somatic Movement

Through somatic movement, I learned to tune into the subtle sensations within my body, recognizing areas of tension and stagnation where emotions had become trapped. As I moved through various exercises and stretches, I found myself unraveling layers of suppressed emotion, releasing years of pent-up energy stored within my muscles and tissues.

Yoga

Yoga, with its emphasis on breathwork and mindfulness, complemented my somatic practice perfectly. Each breath became a tool for releasing tension, allowing me to sink deeper into postures and explore the connection between my physical body and emotional state. With each practice, I felt more grounded and present, shedding the layers of emotional baggage that had weighed me down for so long.

One of the most profound realizations on my journey was discovering that much of the emotional burden I carried wasn't even mine to begin with. I had been absorbing the energy of those around me, internalizing their pain and suffering as if it were my responsibility to bear. Somatic movement and yoga helped me discern what was truly mine, enabling me to set boundaries and protect my own emotional well-being.

As I have continued to integrate these practices into my life, I’ve  noticed profound shifts in my overall mood and outlook. People on the outside rarely saw the  cloud of negativity that had once loomed over me, I was for the most part bright and optimistic but  what I was covering up  was like a heavy backpack I picked up everyday and was my constant companion, until I began to work on letting go of my own stuff and other people’s stuff…Really understanding that I had enough of  my own to manage that I couldn’t and wouldn’t manage other people’s stuff anymore.

As I did this work with compassion to myself and my circle of friends and family, I strengthened who I knew I was and what I had the capacity to manage, the heaviness began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of lightness and clarity. I no longer unconsciously felt dragged down by my emotions but empowered to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience.

Processing stored emotions is not easy. It requires courage to confront the depths of our being and vulnerability to release what no longer serves us. Yet, the rewards are immeasurable – a newfound sense of freedom, authenticity, and inner peace.

Explore the transformative power of emotional release for yourself.

If you find yourself burdened by unresolved emotions, I encourage you to explore the transformative power of emotional release in whatever way works best for you, a practitioner that can guide you through the process, a class, a weekend retreat, breathwork, sound therapy, journaling, or my favorite, somatic movement yoga. Allow yourself the space to unravel, to release, and to reclaim ownership of your emotional well-being. You deserve to live a life free from the weight of past traumas, empowered to embrace each moment with open arms and an open heart.
