You Don’t Have to Be Good at Meditation—You Just Need to Start
You Don’t Have to Be ‘Good’ at Meditation. You Just Need to Start.
If you’ve ever tried meditating and thought, “Wow, I am terrible at this”—congratulations! You’re doing it right.
Somewhere along the way, meditation picked up this totally false reputation that you need to be good at it. Like there’s some kind of Meditation Olympics where monks in robes are judging you on how still your mind is. Spoiler alert: That’s not a thing. Meditation is not about winning. It’s not even about being good. It’s about doing it at all.
The Myth of the ‘Perfect’ Meditation
Let’s bust this one wide open: There is no such thing as the perfect meditation session. If you sit down, close your eyes, and your brain immediately starts drafting a grocery list, replaying that awkward thing you said five years ago, or wondering if pigeons ever get lost—guess what? That’s normal.
Meditation isn’t about having no thoughts. It’s about noticing those thoughts without getting carried away by them. Your mind wandering doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re human.

Letting Go of ‘Doing It Right’
If you’re like me, you probably love a good plan. A checklist. A system for success. Meditation laughs in the face of that. It’s about sitting with what is, not controlling the experience. And that is hard for those of us who like to be in charge.
But here’s the thing—meditation isn’t another task to perfect. It’s the opposite. It’s a practice in letting go, in allowing yourself to be exactly where you are, thoughts and all. Some days it will feel easy. Some days it will feel like wrangling an army of caffeinated squirrels. Both are fine.
The Only Step That Matters
There’s no complicated entry process here. You don’t need a fancy cushion, a perfectly silent room, or deep enlightenment. You just need to start.
Try this: Close your eyes. Take one deep breath in, then out. Boom. You meditated.
It doesn’t have to be 30 minutes. It doesn’t have to be daily. It just has to be something.
